Today, the Saint Francis Hospital Heart & Vascular Center became the first hospital in Tennessee and one of the first in the nation to use a newly approved medical device to open narrowed coronary arteries, even in heart disease patients with diabetes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved this new device –– the Resolute Integrity Drug-Eluting Stent (DES) from Medtronic.
The Resolute Integrity DES is the first and only heart stent to be FDA approved for treating patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who also have diabetes. Remarkably, the new device has been shown in a global series of clinical studies to yield consistently strong performance in CAD patients with and without diabetes. Approximately one-third of all patients[i] –– an estimated 300,000 people in the United States alone[ii] –– who receive a stent each year have diabetes.
“The Resolute Integrity Drug-Eluting Stent represents a significant advance in the interventional treatment of coronary artery disease,” said Basil Paulus, MD, Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Saint Francis Hospital. “The device’s indication for CAD patients with diabetes in particular really distinguishes it from the alternatives.”
Caused by a buildup of fatty deposits, or plaque, in coronary arteries, CAD is the most common type of heart disease and the leading cause of death in the United States, killing almost half a million Americans each year.[iii] Research shows that people with diabetes have a two- to three-fold increased risk for CAD and two- to four-fold higher CAD morbidity and mortality rates.[iv]Historically it’s been difficult to treat CAD patients with diabetes because they tend to have smaller coronary arteries and persistently elevated blood-sugar levels, which can increase the rate of procedural complications and long-term safety risks.
A stent is a tiny mesh cylinder designed to prop open a narrowed artery. A drug-eluting stent is coated with medication that is designed to prevent the artery from narrowing again; the drug elutes from the stent and into the arterial wall.
More information about the Resolute Integrity DES is available online at www.medtronicstents.com.

The first and only general aviation terminal in the world to achieve a LEED® Platinum certification was designed by the Chattanooga team of Allen & Hoshall. Today at an event hosted by The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority, it was announced that the Fixed Based Operation (FBO) General Aviation Terminal managed by Wilson Air Center received the coveted certification. This prestigious award was given by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
LEED, an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the USGBC’s leading rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.
The CMAA FBO General Aviation Terminal is a fine example of Allen & Hoshall’s commitment to quality architecture and engineering. “Our team at Allen & Hoshall is delighted that our work has garnered national attention and a LEED Platinum certification for the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority’s general aviation terminal,” said Rick Boeving, AIA, Vice President. Boeving is architect of record for this project.
The team of Allen & Hoshall also designed and managed the construction project for the CMAA’s Aircraft Hangar Building, which achieved LEED GOLD certification.
Glen Heath, Vice President, Allen & Hoshall, served as the project manager. “The 9,000 sq. ft. aviation terminal is a project that we take pride in. This was a team effort, and I commend the team at Allen & Hoshall for their high-quality performance, contribution to the project, and the LEED Platinum certification,” said Heath.
Other members of the Allen & Hoshall staff and team who worked on General Aviation Terminal and Hangar include: Norman Sneed, Kyle Adams, Michel Lebel, Stevie O’Neal, Adam Coats, James Simpson, Jeremy Scallion, Jason Needham, Rob Herd, Watson Consulting Engineers, Kersey Wike and Artech Interior Furnishings in Chattanooga.
The CMAA FBO General Aviation Terminal was designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. LEED verifies environmental performances, occupant health and financial return. It was established for market leaders to design and construct buildings that protect and save precious resources while also making good economic sense.
“The strength of USGBC has always been the collective strength of our leaders in the building industry,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection and the central role of the building industry in that effort, the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority demonstrates their leadership through their LEED certification of its FBO General Aviation Terminal.”
For over a decade, Allen & Hoshall has designed and overseen construction projects for the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport. John Naylor is the Vice President of Planning and Development with CMMA and is very pleased with Allen & Hoshall’s quality of work. “The Allen & Hoshall team led by Glen Heath, PE, and Rick Boeving, AIA, has exceeded our expectations for this project, bringing the buildings which were not only beautiful but within a very tight budget and time constraints,” said Naylor. “Their professionalism, technical expertise and client service is exceptional.”

Feedback from the meetings will help the President in his plan to create jobs, tax cuts for business owners, hiring incentives, access to a ready and trained workforce and BusinessUSA, a website that will provide companies with federal resources for business and exports.
A White House tour is planned that morning and the meeting will take place in the afternoon from 2 to 6 p.m. EST. Self will also get the opportunity to discuss with White House officials ways in which Memphis can grow and thrive.

Daycare students watched while Pat and Gina Neely, who co-hosts the Food Network’s “Down Home with the Neelys” spoke to them and delivered bags of gifts to the children.
If the glowing faces and twinkling smiles of 200 children signified anything, they were signs that Gina and Pat Neely, hosts of the Food Network’s “Down Home with the Neelys” successful cooking show, had accomplished their mission.
“Seeing the kids’ faces… that’s precious,” said Gina Neely, who, along with Pat Neely, made a grand entrance Thursday afternoon (December 22) and brought with them bags of toys to present to the children at The New Glory Preparatory & Learning Daycare in the South Memphis community.
“Gina and I are so excited to give back,” said Pat Neely, who wore a Santa hat along with Gina and dropped off seven red, blue and green bags filled with toys. The words “Santa’s Sack” were imprinted in white letters on the four red bags – an indication no doubt that the Neelys were, at that moment, South Memphis’ Mr. and Mrs. Claus.
The Neelys arrived in an SUV filled with the big bags. Gina, Pat, their daughters and staff attended the event as well. Pat Neely referred to them as elves. They wore red and green pointed felt hats for the occasion.“The kids are excited, but not as excited as we a
re,” said Pat Neely, adding that he and Gina plan to keep the spirit of giving alive throughout the year.
“Over the past few years, we felt we hadn’t given enough,” he said.
Henry Brooks, owner of the daycare, said he and the Neelys have been friends since they were students at Melrose High School.
“They are celebrities and haven’t changed since high school,” he said.
