DETAILS:
On Monday, June 23, supporters of Thomas Clardy will host a prayer vigil at 7 p.m. at Corinthian Baptist Church, located at 819 33rd Avenue North, Nashville, TN 37209.
Recently, the State of Tennessee filed a motion seeking Thomas Clardy’s return to prison after being released in 2023 by a U.S. District Court. The State of Tennessee’s motion comes after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear Clardy’s appeal of a January 2025 Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that reversed the district court’s 2023 order overturning his conviction, leaving him in limbo about his continued freedom.
Clardy’s case has been remanded to the federal district court for additional litigation. Meanwhile, Clardy’s attorneys have filed two clemency petitions – a petition for exoneration and a petition for commutation. Governor Bill Lee has the executive power to grant either one.
Clardy was originally convicted in 2007 for a 2005 triple shooting at an auto body shop in Madison that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two others. Clardy served 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, only to have that decision reversed by a federal appeals court. He now faces an uncertain future, potentially behind bars again.
Clardy was released in October 2023 following a ruling by a federal district judge in Nashville overturning his conviction, while declaring that the case against him was based on “paltry” and “exceedingly weak” evidence. No physical evidence has ever tied Clardy to the crime, no motive was ever presented at trial, and he was at home with his pregnant wife at the time of the shooting.
Since his release in 2023, Clardy has reunited with his family, demonstrated exemplary conduct, remained steadily employed and deepened connections with his community. He has also continuously maintained his innocence.

About the Tennessee Innocence Project:
Launched in February 2019 as the first full-time innocence organization in the state, the Tennessee Innocence Project (TIP) is a non-profit law firm working to free wrongfully convicted Tennesseans. To date, more than 3,200 people have lost more than 25,000 years due to wrongful convictions across the United States. TIP has three primary focus areas: 1) investigating and litigating wrongful conviction cases for those in Tennessee prisons to obtain exonerations, 2) training law students and attorneys about how to litigate these cases and how to prevent future wrongful convictions, and 3) bringing about changes that lead to the discovery of wrongful convictions and remedies to the wrongfully convicted.
